DIY Kentucky State HOME sign

Monday, October 13, 2014

Hey y'all. Happy Monday. How many of you are The Walking Dead fans? We are not huge TV watchers around here but you better believe that is one show we do not miss. Loved last nights return! What did you think of the show?

I'm sure you've seen by now that Britt and I have started an Etsy shop called 5oh4Designs. 5oh4Designs is a play on our 2 states area codes, 502 and 304. We thought it would be a cute and unique way to name our shop.

I currently live in West Virginia but I'm originally from Kentucky and I miss my home state and family every day so I made this sign for my home and will be displaying it our living room. I will also be selling these as a "custom" order piece through the shop with any state and color combo available.

This is a fairly easy DIY project. I just screwed together a few pieces of scrap wood and stained them. While that was drying I made a stencil using a Kentucky silhouette that I printed out on cardstock.

I cut the state out with an Xacto knife and I was left with a perfect KY state stencil.

Once the stain was dry I used reusable stencil stickers to add the wording and I taped the KY stencil directly to the wood and then I dry brushed on some white acrylic paint to the whole piece, right over top of the stencils.

Sorry, I'm a bad blogger. I forgot to take a picture of it painted...but you get the point...imagine the above picture with white paint all over it.

After the paint was dry I removed the stencils and wa-la! A perfect image of Kentucky and easy peasy wording. I hand painted the "HOME" letters on the state and called it done. This is a lyric from one of my favorite songs and one of my favorite movies..."It feels like home to me"...how many of y'all have seen How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days? Best ever! :)

What do y'all think? I love it, it reminds me of home and I am sentimental like that!
